If anyone watched, or started to watch the Superbowl last night, you would have seen the Seattle Seahawks destroy the top offence in the League 48-3. Most people talk about their amazing defence, focused quarterback or pumped up coach. But what some might not know is that the coach (Pete Carroll) has a mandate on the team, that every player MUST take Yoga and Mediation classes. I found this amazing when I read this today over at www.elitedaily.com
Carroll told ESPN:
“I wanted to find out if we went to the NFL and really took care of guys, really cared about each and every individual, what would happen?”
One of the Seahawks players also added:
“Meditation is as important as lifting weights and being out here on the field for practice,” Okung said. “It’s about quieting your mind and getting into certain states where everything outside of you doesn’t matter in that moment. There are so many things telling you that you can’t do something, but you take those thoughts captive, take power over them and change them.”
Maybe now, teams and businesses will realize how important these sort of things are to stay focused and deal with the difficult, pressure filled moments – it’s also great advice for individuals to keep up with these practices also.
I think more sports teams and businesses should do this. When I was working in a stressed IT environment I tried a few times to implement this but without much success. I heard the “We don’t have enough time” excuse many times.
